Redevelopment Projects, New Delhi

Project Brief
Pragati Maidan: Located alongside New Delhi’s Central Vista Avenue (Raj path), Pragati Maidan has been an important area of civic interaction since it was designated as a national exhibition space in 1972. Pragati Maidan is a venue for large exhibitions and conventions in the city of New Delhi, India. It has an area of nearly 120 acres of exhibition space, being among the biggest exhibition centers in India. It is owned, operated, controlled and managed by India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO), the trade promotion agency of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India.

With the aim to transform the existing facility into a world-class venue that can accommodate global meetings, conventions, exhibitions, etc., the redevelopment project of Pragati Maidan was initiated. The project includes the International Exhibition & Convention Centre (IECC), which will provide over 100,000 sq. m. of exhibition space with a Convention Centre at a planned capacity of 13,500 people.

IICC (India International Convention & Expo Centre): IICC (India International Convention & Expo Centre) is a prominent convention and exhibition center located in Dwarka, New Delhi. It holds the distinction of being India’s largest facility of its kind. With its state-of-the-art infrastructure and expansive space, IICC serves as a premier venue for hosting a wide range of events, including conventions, trade shows, exhibitions, and conferences. Designed to meet international standards, IICC offers a versatile and flexible environment to accommodate diverse needs. It attracts a diverse range of industries and professionals, providing a platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and showcasing the best of Indian and global innovations.

Choice of Material
The IECC was designed on a steel structure Jindal Steel & Power (JSP) developed new products in High Strength Steel, for better strength, in response to requirements. It involved working closely with the designers to convince the usage of this high-strength steel grades like E350. The convention center was designed on JSP sections. JSP offers a wide range of sections with multiple section weights in each section, thereby helping the design teams to optimize the construction design. The supply of material in high-strength steel and customized lengths immensely benefitted the construction activity both in terms of material handling/usage and cost.

The steel structure for IICC was designed on JSP sections. JSP sections, over a period of time, have become the preferred choice of designers as it offers both versatility and flexibility due to their inherent attributes. Multiple sections with multiple sectional weights in each section coupled with high-strength steel make JSP sections the single-point stop for designers for all their critical and prestigious projects.

Fire Resistance
In order to enhance the fire resistance of steel building structures, JSP has developed fire-resistant steels with different strength levels. These steels represent a notable improvement over conventional steels in terms of elevated temperature YS. The yield strength of the fire-resistant steels at 600°C was set at the minimum of two-thirds of the specified room-temperature YS while maintaining a low yield ratio, good weldability and other properties.
