Maharashtra Government Allocates Rs 12 Bn for Shirdi Airport Expansion

The Maharashtra government has issued an official resolution, allocating over Rs 12 billion for the completion of pending tasks and the construction of an additional terminal at Shirdi Airport. According to the resolution, Rs 3.64 billion has been earmarked for prior projects, while Rs 8.76 billion is designated for expanding Shirdi Airport, which includes the creation of a new terminal. This proposal, presented by the state’s chief secretary, received approval from both the chief minister and the cabinet.

Shirdi Airport, currently connected to major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Tirupati, serves as a crucial hub for Sai Baba devotees. The airport handles a monthly traffic of more than 64,000 passengers and manages both passenger and cargo services, including agricultural products. The allocated funds will primarily be used to enhance the airport’s surroundings, construct an entrance gate, renovate the runway, upgrade airport sewage systems, and acquire land for housing security personnel stationed at the cargo complex. Additionally, plans include establishing a training center on the premises.

Recognizing the increasing influx of devotees, the state government aims to optimize the airport’s capacity. Currently, the airport can accommodate only 300 passengers per hour. However, with the construction of the new terminal, the capacity is expected to increase to over 1,200 passengers per hour. To cater to this growing demand, the government intends to introduce more food and beverage stalls at the airport. The new terminal, spanning an area of 55,000 sq m, will feature modern amenities. The ground level will include a check-in hall, passenger screening facilities, a secure hold area, and an advanced baggage handling system. This development represents a significant advancement in improving Shirdi Airport’s infrastructure and accommodating the rising number of travelers. With the construction of the new terminal, the capacity is expected to increase to over 1,200 passengers per hour.
