Tata Steel Breaks Ground on ₹2,600 Crore Green Steel Plant in Ludhiana

Tata Steel recently inaugurated the groundbreaking ceremony for its upcoming scrap-based electric arc furnace (EAF) plant in Ludhiana, with a capacity of 7.50 lakh tonnes per annum.

The company has allocated ₹2,600 crore for the first phase of this project, which is set to be operational by March 2025. Notably, this facility represents Tata Steel’s maiden venture into establishing a low-carbon green steel plant in India.

This state-of-the-art plant will incorporate advanced technologies, including electric arc furnaces, renowned for their energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions compared to conventional steelmaking methods.

Ludhiana was strategically chosen as the plant’s location due to its proximity to the Hi-Tech Valley Industrial Park and an automotive center, which facilitates the sourcing of steel scrap for the production of long steel products under Tata Steel’s flagship brand, Tata Tiscon.

T.V. Narendran, the Managing Director of Tata Steel, emphasized that this modern facility in Ludhiana underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable manufacturing and its ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045.

The project is expected to create 500 direct jobs and an additional 2,000 indirect employment opportunities.
